Alaska Black Bear Hunting - Alaska Black Bear

ALASKA BLACK BEAR HUNTING
Alaska Black Bear Hunting - Guided Alaska Black Bear HuntingBLACK BEAR - (Ursus americanus)

Alaska Black Bear are abundant in most areas of Alaska.  This makes them less regulated than the Brown Bear.  Each year hunters in Alaska take thousands of Black Bear.  The Black Bear reproduces at a low rate and this makes it important to be a selective hunter and only take the big males.  In some areas of Alaska it is legal to hunt Black Bear using Bait.  This allows the hunter to be more selective and only take the right bear. Alaska Black Bears are located in most areas of Alaska, and are responsible for most of the bear attacks that do actually occur in Alaska.  Hunting Black Bear in Alaska is serious business and should be considered such.

Being a selective Alaska Black Bear hunter will help the Alaska Fish and Game regulate the hunts "LESS".  With healthy populations and plenty of female Black Bears to reproduce and keep the Black Bear population at a higher level - Alaska Fish and Game will increase hunts more so than decrease them.  Being selective with the Alaska Black Bears that are taken benefits everyone and all future hunting in Alaska.

You willl need to know the difference between the Female and the Male Black Bears in order to succesfully select the right sex of the bear.  Below are two photos that will help you make a better decision on what your looking at in the wild.

The Difference Between Male and Female Black Bears

FEMALE - Alaska Black BearFEMALE BLACK BEAR
This is a female Black Bear.  The females of the Black Bear Species are typically smaller and leaner than the males.  The female Black Bear is sometimes described as "all legs".  The face is narrower than the males and the ears seem much bigger because of the size difference in the head.

Being selective sometimes means being patient.  Female Black Bears with cubs usually enter an area ahead of the cubs.  You may not see the cubs at first, so you must hold off for a minute or two and see if any appear.  Female Black Bears are usually more shy and cautious than their male counterparts.  Take your time before you shoot, to ensure the correct choice is made.

MALE - Alaska Black BearMALE BLACK BEAR
This is a male Black Bear. The males of the Black Bear Species are typically bigger and "rounder" than the females. The male head is wider and rounder than the females.  This makes the ears look smaller and farther apart than the female.

The male Black Bear also has a bigger rounder body than the female.  The male is not as cautious when entering an area.  When you have looked over the entire situation and have decided that this is the bear, then shoot.  In any case being selective is the best thing a hunter can do in order to obtain that trophy Alaska Black Bear and provide a better Alaska Black Bear population for future hunts.
