This is a well maintained paved highway. This is the main access from Anchorage to the Matanuska Susitna Valley recreation areas. Many scenic views of the Wrangell and Talkeetna mountain ranges.

Description:
Rough gravel road heavily traveled by truckers taking equipment and supplies to Prudhoe Bay and other areas along the highway. Many wildlife viewing opportunities and pristine wilderness. This areas is not very populated and the road is sometimes all that is there. This is truely the Alaska wilderness. Parallels the Trans Alaska Pipeline off and on throughout the complete distance. The highway is restricted access after mile 211, you must obtain a permit from the Alaska DOT in order to access the entire road. Drive with headlights on at all times and always yield to big trucks.
